Acknowledging Biotech in Publications

Acknowledge Cores

Acknowledging the Nebraska Center for Biotechnology in your publications

To help simplify acknowledgments, each core has registered Research Resource Identifiers (RRIDs) - unique identifiers for biological resources used in research. Please use the appropriate core RRID provided below. Proper acknowledgment of our core facilities enhances the visibility and credibility of these vital resources and facilitates continued funding and support to sustain operations that benefit the research mission of the University. Acknowledging the core facilities in publications and reports is essential for developing a culture of collaboration, mutual respect, integrity, and appreciation essential for advancing scientific knowledge and innovation.

Please see below the RRIDs assigned to the Nebraska Center for Biotechnology cores:

We thank the <insert core name> Facility (<insert RRID #>), part of the Nebraska Center for Biotechnology at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, for their <insert service used>.
The facility and its instrumentation are supported by the Nebraska Research Initiative <add other funding sources as appropriate: HCC, NCIBC, DOE, NIH, etc.>. <Thank individuals from the cores as necessary>.

FAQs

When to give authorship vs. acknowledgment.

Authorship credit should be given if members of the Nebraska Center for Biotechnology have provided services or expertise that are critical to a manuscript. In all our work the person executing the work takes the fullest degree of responsibility for the accuracy and integrity of data collected in the core facility. Authors are those who meet at least one of the following criteria although other circumstances may warrant authorship:

  1. Provides substantial contributions to the experimental design, data acquisition, or analysis/interpretation of the work.
  2. Provides input on drafting of the work (figures, methods, and other parts of the manuscript) and approves of the work to be submitted/published.

  • If a member of the core facility made contributions that are worthy of authorship it is expected that they be given the opportunity to review drafts of manuscripts for accuracy/fidelity as a draft is moved forward to publication.
  • If a member of the Nebraska Center for Biotechnology has contributed work towards a manuscript, but does not meet the criteria for authorship, the corresponding author should acknowledge the staff member and the facility that provided the data. The Nebraska Center for Biotechnology and the Nebraska Research Initiative should also be acknowledged as they provide subsidization to UNL faculty that lowers core facility rates.
  • It would be appreciated if the corresponding author made the Nebraska Center for Biotechnology staff aware of any publications that involve data from a core. This information is important for the core facility's annual reports and for obtaining the subsidy from the Nebraska Research Initiative. These authorship expectations were developed in accordance with several other documents that outline criteria for authorship:

What types of publications should have an acknowledgment?

All work performed at the Nebraska Center for Biotechnology should be acknowledged in scholarly reports, presentations, posters, papers, and all other publications.

  • If a member of the Nebraska Center for Biotechnology has contributed work towards a manuscript, but does not meet the criteria for authorship, the corresponding author should acknowledge the staff member and the facility that provided the data. The Nebraska Center for Biotechnology and the Nebraska Research Initiative should also be acknowledged as they provide subsidization of funding to UNL faculty that lowers the rates the core facility charges.

Why give the Biotech Center credit?

Acknowledging our core facilities in research papers is not just a gesture of courtesy; it's a testament to the collaborative nature of scientific inquiry and the invaluable support provided by these essential resources. Core facilities play a pivotal role in enabling groundbreaking research by offering access to state-of-the-art instrumentation, expertise, and technical assistance that may otherwise be inaccessible to individual labs. By recognizing the contributions of our core facilities in your publications, you ensure transparency and accountability in the scientific process. Moreover, acknowledgment of our core facilities enhances the visibility and credibility of these vital resources and facilitates continued funding and support to sustain operations that benefit the research mission of the University.  Acknowledging the core facilities in report research papers is essential for developing a culture of collaboration, mutual respect, integrity, and appreciation for advancing scientific knowledge and innovation.

Thank you for your acknowledgment so we can continue to provide these resources.

How to let us know if you already acknowledged or collaborated with us!

Congratulations on your recent work! To continue to provide the best services to you, we must have accurate publication information. Please take a minute to let us know about your past work with the Nebraska Center for Biotechnology! We’ll highlight your research on our platforms as well.
