Nebraska Center for Biotechnology Policy on Authorship and Acknowledgment in Publications(January 2015)
- Authorship credit should be given if members of the Nebraska Center for Biotechnology have provided services or expertise that is critical to a manuscript. Authors are those who meet the following criteria although other circumstances may warrant authorship:
- Provides substantial contributions to the experimental design, acquisition, or analysis/interpretation of the work.
- Agrees to be accountable for accuracy or integrity of the work. (In all our work the person executing the work takes the fullest degree of responsibility for accuracy and integrity.)
- Provides input on drafting of the work (often figures) and approves of the work to be submitted/published. (If a member of the facility has made substantial contributions it is expected that s/he will be given the opportunity to review drafts of manuscripts for accuracy/fidelity and should indicate agreement before a draft is moved forward to publication.)
- If a member of the Nebraska Center for Biotechnology has contributed work to a manuscript, but does not meet the criteria for authorship, the corresponding author should acknowledge the staff member who provided the data and their contributions should be specified. The Nebraska Center for Biotechnology and the Nebraska Research Initiative should also be acknowledged as it provides funding to support core facilities. Examples of activities that alone do not qualify a contributor for authorship are: acquisition of funding, general supervision or administrative support, and writing assistance. The corresponding author should consult with and obtain agreement from the Nebraska Center for Biotechnology staff when acknowledging individuals.
